Ticket machine

The ticket office was unmanned today so tried to buy my weekly season from the ticket machine. Unfortunately there was a coin jammed in the credit card slot. Not sure if this had been done accidentially or on pupose, but the machine does eeem very vunerable to vandalism, being situated on the open platform.

Someone managed to remove the coin but the card reader would not accept my card. Others had the same problem.

The delayed 07:27 service was too crowded to buy a ticket on board so had to wait till I got to BTM.

I had no problem with the ticket machine, but saw the queue building badly - and I also spotted the guy who'd been covering the ticket office skulking behind it as the train (07:31) pulled out of the station! Maybe I'm being overly cynical, but it seems like this is the thin end of the "fully unmanned station" wedge.

The Credit Card slot on the ticket machine at Yate is taped over with plastic yellow and black hazard tape, so is the keypad for entering the PIN number and has been so ever since the machine was powered up. Apparently they are waiting for a replacement unit before credit cards can be used.

Also is/are the ticket machine(s) at Oldfield Park positioned like the two at Yate, open to the full glare of the sun and thus very difficult to read except in the evening twilight and hours of darkness.

May 8th 2007. The ticket machine at Filton Abbey Wood still not operational over a month into the Bristol Area penalty fares era.

I'd just found out yet another shocking disparity between travelling in/to London, and commuting in the south west. Not only did our fares go up by 13 % compared to 4% in London. But now I have discovered that a Weekly season to london costs 1.4 x a daily ticket, whilst my weekly season from Bath to Cardiff is 4.3 x a daily ticket.
I would be interested to know what this ratio is for other FGW travellers in the SW.

I had major problems when trying to use the Oldfield park ticket machine: The glare of the sun making the screen unreadable, rejecting my money because I was 25p over, and rejecting my money because I took too long putting it in! Read more here: http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=250.msg1851#msg1851

The whole experience left me stressed out and reluctant to use the station again. I have written to FGW.

In my view the machine should be scrapped and we should have the ticket office open mon-fri, 6am-6pm.
