1000 more carriages
The government have today announced an additional 1000 carriages across the entire network by 2014 that would be leased to the operating companies at a cost of £130m a year.
That works out at £130,000 per carriage per year that will be paid to the government by the train operators.
How much does it cost to build a train carriage for God's sake?
Of course, with passenger numbers growing at 10% a year, 1000 extra carriages by 2014 means more overcrowding, not less

A Desiro costs £6 milllion per 4 coach train. I don't think they make the coaches used by FGW on their Bristol Portsmouth routes any more, so it will mean new build, of complete trains not single addiitonal coaches, with all the complex requirements of new build trains in europe today
Can someone tell me whether FGW have any financial incentive to run their trains both on time and with the required number of carriages?
In theory the Government can remove their franchise for consistent poor performance, but this wont happen.
Otherwise the only financial penalties is for us to claim back our fares, but we can only do this for delays longer than 30 min.
Its all a bit complicated but.......if they run their trains late, over 5 minutes for local services or 10 minute son high speed services (thats on arrival at destination)then they are measured on that or if they cancel a train thats another measurement, if a train temrinates short or runs more than I think its 20 minutes late tehn that counts as a cancelled train. All rail companies are measured this way, I think FGW are one of the worst.
If they run with fewer carrisges then they are measured on this as well.
For all these measurements they have triggers for payments to season ticket holders and fines to the DFT.
But its more complicated than that in reality
We already have spare carriages rotting in sidings. There are hundreds of coaches for high speed trains unused since Virgin introduced their pendolinos and hundreds of desiel units no longer required by Transpennine. If the Governemnet is serious about expanding capacity it would use these carriages now. Until they do I am skeptical about the Governments announcement. It either means that they are only interested in third-rail electric trains for the SE or that they have no intention of building the new coaches and that this is just another jam-tomorrow annuncement
hot news............those carriages FGW robbed form the north, welll they have to be reallocated in May, so watch out for short trains and cancellations again.......whooppeeee
great train blog! Really solid info. Would love to see some info on train horns
