Bath police not beat
I have to admit that the performance of the police in Bath over the past 9 months or so has been much improved. There own crime figures show what is apparent to me as I walk around my local area; there is less car crime, less yobbishness, basically a more secure feeling to the place.
The police have achieved this through a number if initiatives, such as targeting the small number of criminals that commit the majority of crimes. Commonsense to you and me, but 12 months ago such commonsense seemed beyond the capabilities of the local police.
Of course we would all like the police to have a higher visibility. In fact any visibility would be good. It is still the case that you can go for weeks without seeing a policemen; months without seeing one on foot.
I like to play a game I call Spot the Policeman. Award yourself 1 point if you see a police car in the city centre, 2 points for a policemen on foot in the centre; 5 points for a police car outside the centre and 10 for a policeman on foot outside of the centre. At the end of the week see how many points you have. I guarantee that you will have many weeks where you score 0 points. Not good enough is it?
Of course we could all take more responsibility for our local streets ourselves. As a dog walker I am always amazed at how few people I see walking, at any time of day.
Bath is a small town where many journeys can easily be made on foot.
If we are too lazy to walk our steets why should the police bother? I am sure we can all help reduce crime simply by walking around our local streets rather than driving everywhere. Get on your feet to reclaim your street.
