Priorities at the Bath Priory

Eating out should be one of the graet attractions of Bath. Unfortunately, over the past year or so we have lost a few of our best eating venues. The Moody Goose took flight and left Bath, the Olive Tree came under new management and alienated it's clientale. The Pinch of Salt was a revelation food wise, but it's cramped venue and that bloody door that would not shut meant that there were only 2 decent tables in the place. It has been replaced, by the same owners, by some bistro whose name I cannot even remember and it's bizarre collection of furniture reminds me of the nursery my daugher used to go to.

So where else to go except the Bath Priory? Read the hype and this is the best restuarant in Bath; with amazing gardens to stroll around. I was looking forward to it. I was, really.

They made us very welcome too, at least for the first minute or so. We were greeted from our taxi and led into the wonderfully comfortable drawing room. I could easily have dozed the whole afternnon in that room. In fact I thimk the staff would have let me since it was half an hour before we were offered a drink; the staff apparently assuming we were part of a wedding party, although we had clearly booked seperately.

Still, when we ordered from the al a catre menu rather than the set lunch menu we were treated like royalty, with the best table in the restuarant; in the window overlooking those splendid gardens. The staff were friendly and attentive; perhaps a little too attentive. I got the impression they wanted us to get down on our knees and thank them everytime they topped up our water glasses.

The food was excellent in terms of tast and presntation. What there was of it. For £50 a head, there was not enough food to satisfy a sparrow. "I think I need new glasses" I said to my wife, " I can't see the food."

Still, we enjoyed the meal, even if we did have to nip into the Park Tavern for a plate of chips afterwards.

Oh, and those gardens...very disappointing...overrun with bindweed in places, which my wife found very disapointing.

At least they undercharged us by £50. There is a God.
