Friday 12th January

A repeat of Wednesday this morning. The 07:31 was back to 2 carriages again) and was 20 minutes late after apparently failing at Westbury. Hardly anyone at Oldfield park was able to board and the guard had to ask people to disembark just so that he could get back on the train!

I caught the delayed 07:36 South West trains service at O7:55 but some people were still stranded at Oldfield Park(and of course at poor old Keynsham). The guard on the South West trains service was at pains to explain that the delay to that service and the gross overcrowding was entirely due to the failure of the preceding First Great Western service.

Many of the ex-Wessex carriages have gone back to the leasing company and are in storage at Eastleigh and Reading. They haven't been replaced and for those that remain, the servicing has been moved from Cardiff to the HST depot at Bristol. Unfortunately, the HST depot is already at capacity and the promised DMU shed has not been finished (something about rare newts?). Maintenance has deteriorated badly and the trains are not even being washed now. Train failures are increasingly common and this is why FGW cannot supply the advertised number of carriages. Because there are always a number of trains awaiting repair. Example: yesterday evening at Westbury. A failed train in platform 2 had to be shunted to the sidings for repair. It shunted on to the Trowbridge line and failed terminally blocking the line for an hour. At the same time, the Southampton had failed at Salisbury. A third train was blocked in the sidings by the first failed train. Eventually, train 1 was rescued, train 2 limped back empty and train 3 started an hour late. The DfT and FGW may have agreed a minimum service level but if the trains are not working, even that cannot be achieved. Please do not take it out on the staff, it is not their fault. Please read my earlier comments under the picture entitled 'passengers remonstate with staff'. Thanks.
